Johnny Chen

Born in Taiwan, the artist Johnny Chen attended the prestigious Taiwan Academy of Fine Arts – Renaissance Fine Arts during high school. For his university education, he studied at Bangkok University in Thailand. During his time in Thailand, he absorbed cultures and perspectives from around the world, with the creative and rich thinking of the Thai people significantly influencing his worldview.

Johnny, who had a passion for painting since a young age, displayed a unique talent that allowed him to explore uncharted territories in the world of art. During his studies, he met his Ukrainian classmate Michael, who asked Johnny to create a portrait of his father as a birthday gift. Johnny completed this portrait using only a simple ballpoint pen, leaving a deep impression on Michael’s father, who then invited him to visit his stainless steel factory.

Michael’s father recognized Johnny’s creative talent and suggested using a grinding wheel not just for traditional purposes but as a tool for creating artwork. This serendipitous encounter marked the beginning of Johnny’s journey into the world of metal art sculpture.

“The people of Thailand take special pride in their rich cultural heritage, seamlessly blending tradition with modern styles to create unique and inspiring environments. This harmonious fusion of old and new elements provides endless opportunities for creativity and inspiration.” — Johnny.

Johnny’s unique sense of beauty and perspective, combined with his masterful skills, give birth to a new style that merges industry and art. He infuses warmth and soul into the cold, rigid metal, elevating metal craftsmanship to new heights.

“I hope to contribute to the Taiwanese art scene. Taiwan possesses rich cultural assets that deserve to be showcased to the world. I firmly believe that the beauty and values conveyed through art can have a positive impact and inspire Taiwan. I aspire to inspire others to value Taiwanese art, enhance society and the human spirit through an understanding of art, and bring about positive change. Together, I hope we can make Taiwanese art and culture shine even brighter on the international stage.” — Johnny.

About
Born in Taoyuan, Taiwan, Mr. Liang Shengrong has been obsessed with the beauty of art since childhood. In 1980, he graduated in first place in the Taiwan Renaissance Art and Crafts Sculpture Group. He has a solid foundation in painting and sculpture. In the early years after graduation, he used to walk around places like Taipei’s Ximending and do fast paintings of passers-by, capturing the experience of the moment in rich detail. After joining Taiwan’s Shengmao Company as their chief ceramic art designer in 1985, his pottery making techniques became more mature. However, a conflict grew between the demands of industrial production and the artistic desires in his heart, which were not satisfied by his 9 to 5 job. In the late 1980s, Mr. Liang was fortunate enough to meet the famous Taiwanese collector Zhou Heng-wu. Mr. Zhou has a great eye for art, and saw Mr. Liang’s creative potential. He was able to help Mr. Liang change his way of thinking from that of a craftsman to that of an artist.
Totally devoted to his art, for half a year, Mr. Liang closed himself in his three-story home without leaving. His life was assisted by others, and his passion for creation was almost crazy. Then, with the help of Mr. Zhou Hengwu, he went to the People’s Republic of China, in the midst of a reform boom, and witnessed and exchanged ideas with famous artists including “Taodu” Yixing. In the end, Mr. Liang, with his own creative sentiment, learned from the strengths of others, and studied the unique techniques of “pottery coloring” and “irregularity” that had far-reaching significance for his future path as an artist. All works are once molded, once fired – once only. The finished product, shape, texture, color and gloss reach the ultimate level of realism. He said: “I feel the plasticity and variability of ceramic art. I am so addicted to it. I call myself ‘the man who loves the earth forever.’” In 1990, Tao Yatang Studio was established in Taiwan, and ceramic art became his lifelong career.
With his unique techniques and thoughts, Mr. Liang’s work has won many awards such as the Taiwan Golden Pottery Award and the Golden Jubilee Award before the millennium, and was officially appreciated by officials including Taiwan’s leaders. On behalf of Taiwan’s ceramic art world, he was invited to participate in foreign art exhibitions including the New York – Taiwan Cultural Center, the French Pontiac Cultural Center, and many other honors. The political and business collectors in Taiwan also sought with enthusiasm for Mr. Liang’s works. Taiwan Museum. As well as Acer, Hsin Tung Yang, Amway and other corporate groups have collections. In the name of Mr. Yu, Mr. Liang was invited to teach at Taiwan Yingge Ceramics School, to teach new and upcoming artists.
